Retainers

In order to keep a smile looking beautiful, retainers need to be worn after the braces are removed or aligners are finished. Retainers are used to allow the bone to firm up around the teeth in their new positions. If the retainers are not worn as instructed, there is a very good chance the teeth will shift.
Towards the end of treatment, Dr. Steiman will discuss the number and types of retainers that are needed to keep your teeth beautifully straight for a very long time.

Removable retainers

Removable retainers are worn full-time for 4 months immediately after the treatment finishes. The next 9 months require night only wear. These retainers are easy to clean by simply brushing them with a toothbrush and toothpaste or liquid soap. Removable retainers are checked and adjusted every 4 months.

Permanent retainers

Permanent wire retainers are placed on the inside of the lower front teeth. A permanent retainer may be placed on the inside of the upper front teeth as well. These retainers are easy to clean by simply brushing the inside of your teeth. Flossing underneath the wire is quick and easy using Superfloss or floss threaders.
